Harm Reduction Michigan (HRMI) provides free substance analysis, also known as drug checking.
We offer several types of testing:
Mail-away drug checking: Send your sample to a University partner, where it is analyzed using gas chromatography.
On-site test strips: Available for medetomidine, xylazine, fentanyl, benzodiazepines, and nitazines. These can be used:
On-site at HRMI with staff assistance
Or taken home for private use
On-site FTIR testing (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)
Large event testing using reagent kits
It is critically important that people have the ability to analyze the substances they plan to ingest, so they can better prevent or manage unexpected health risks — such as wounds, or potentially fatal overdose — caused by adulterants.
All HRMI offices offer mail-away testing and test strips.
FTIR testing availability varies by location.
